Abstract

|
Objectives£ºTo supply information on the effect of psychiatric illness on social course and medical health status in homeless men in one shelter, the authors followed up homeless men 12 month after the inital assessment.
Methods£ºTwo hundred twenty homeless men were followed up at 12 months previously assessed with Korean version of Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I disorder. Information on days in shelter, number of rehousing, work activity, current housing, reason of discharge and health status were gathered from direct interview and charts of the shelter and compared according to diagnostic groups.
Results£ºSubjects with depressive disorder stayed more days in shelter and did less outside works. Subjects with alcohol use disorder stayed the shortest days in shelter and had more rehousing to shelter. More physical illness and outpatients visits were found in subjects with depressive disorder and alcohol use disorder.
Conclusion£ºHomeless people with psychiatric diagnosis had poorer outcome. Development and provision of the treatment and support program for the homeless mentally ill would be necessary to promote the social rehabilitation of the homeless people.
